One of Scotland's most picturesque castles, even its origins are lost in antiquity. Thought to be constructed about 1200, it was long the stronghold of the MacRas. It's beautiful condition, alas, is the result of restoration. It was bombarded and destroyed by British gunships in 1719, but has been a showpiece again since 1928.
